Week 13: Round Up
After being able to digest the Bears heartbreaking 10-3 lose yesterday to the Chiefs their are a few things I think that need to be discussed. Losing Matt Forte has to be more devastating than losing Jay Cutler. Jay Cutler was obviously having his best year as a Bear and it finally looked like he was getting comfortable in Mike Martz's offense. However, Matt Forte accounted for nearly 39% of the Bears offensive plays! Losing him not only hurts the running game, but I think it hurts the passing game even more. Matt Forte was Caleb Hanie only really security blanket, because if he didn't see anything down field, he could always drop it off to Forte and he would at least get five yards. Now with Forte gone, Caleb Hanie is going to have even more pressure on him to succeed and that may not be the best thing for the Bears. Another issue that needs to be addressed has to deal with all of these rumors about the Bears signing free agent quarterback such as Donavan McNabb or Brett Favre. As much as people think these two would be an immediate upgrade over Hanie, there is a few things to consider. First off, if these two guys are such good quarterbacks, why hasn't anyone picked them up? It probably because McNabb has been bounced around three teams in the last three years, because they each have realized he doesn't have much to offer. With Brett Favre, its probably because he is not only a locker room cancer but also his skill have diminished to the point where no one wants to deal with him. Another reason the Bears won't sign any other free agent quarterbacks is because Mike Martz's offense is just to complicated. Unless these quarterbacks are similar with his system, or have played in his system, its going to be nearly impossibly for them to learn it in any time frame that would help the Bears. The Bears season and hope of making it to the playoff rides on the back of Caleb Hanie. He has shown signs of excellence at time and now has to just round off his game and play more consistent. The Bears by all shots, hold their play off destiny in their hands and need to win three out of the next four realistically to make it in. With solid play from the defense and any help from the special teams that they can get, the Bears should be able to make it into the playoffs. So until next time, Bear down Chicago

- Overall, just how much marketing and advertising has evolved
Week 13: Kansas City Chiefs
Coming into the game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Bears had a lot riding on the line. They were already coming off a lose in Oakland that snapped a five game winning streak and a win today would have got them one step closer to making the playoffs. However, things started off very slowly for the Bears. On their first possession, they were back up on their own side of the field and went three and out and had to punt the ball. Luckily Chiefs punt returner Jalil Brown muffed the punt and it was recovered by Zack Bowman. When the Bears got the ball back, they once again went three and out and punted the ball. On the Bears next offensive position, things went from bad to worse as Matt Forte was injured on a running play and was later ruled out for the game. This was a devastating blow to the Bears who were already without starting quarterback Jay Cutler. If Forte is seriously injured and out for a prolonged period, the Bears playoff hopes might go down with his injury. Losing a man that accounts for almost 45 percent of your offense is a big one and the offense struggled without him. Another thing that hurt the Bears in the first half was Caleb Hanie's inability to hit wide receivers on the run. Whether it was to gain a first down, or the occasion where he overthrew Earl Bennett, Hanie once again had a horrible first half. The Bears are going to have to find some way to get Hanie involved with the game early and get his confidence going, because without his ability to make plays, their offense will go no where. I don't understand why Mike Martz hasn't called any screen passes or called more quick throws to get Hanie going. The screen pass was such an important part of the Bears offense early and now is nonexistent. The turning point of the first half and possibly the game came as the second quarter was coming to an end. The Chiefs were spread out and the Bears had 8 men back in coverage as Chiefs quarterback Tyler Palko wound up and threw a pass to the end zone. It looked as if Brian Urlacher was going to have an easy interception to seal the first half but right after Urlacher got his hands on it rookie safety Chris Conte batted the ball out of his hands. This wouldn't have been a big deal except he batted it right into the arms of Chiefs running back Dexter McCluster for the Chiefs first touchdown in over a month. This play revealed Conte's inexperience and ended up being the game winning touchdown.
Throughout the second half, neither offense was able to really get anything going, and the Bears defense always seemed to make the big stop on third down to give the ball back to the offense. However, for the second straight week, special teams was almost nonexistent as the Chiefs did a good job of shutting down Devin Hester. Caleb Hanie once again showed some flashes in the second half, but was unable to make the big third down conversion when needed. One thing that consistently disrupted Hanie's timing was the Chiefs blitzing, which causes fits with the Bears offensive line. It seemed as if the Bears line had trouble all game picking up the blitzes and that resulted in 7 Chief sacks. Towards the end of the fourth quarter, Hanie lead the Bears down the field and got them into the red zone. On their first play in the red zone, Hanie dropped back and slung a very catchable ball to Roy Williams, who juggled the ball which led to an interception. These are things that cannot happen when you have a young quarterback trying to come back and wing games. Once against, Roy Williams achilles heel has been his inability to hold onto catchable balls. Earlier in the game, the Bears had 6 points taken off the board from a wide open touchdown catch by Marion Barber. The play was called back because Barber did not line up on the line of scrimmage which eventually really hurt the Bears. Overall, the Bears missed on to many plays and opportunities to win the game. The offense as a whole needs to step it up and get going if they have any hopes of making the playoffs. The offensive line has to play better and open up more running lanes for the back and give Caleb Hanie more time in the backfield. Caleb Hanie needs to be more accurate with his passed and hit his wide receivers while in stride. He left a lot of big plays on the field and you would only hope that fixes its self with time on the practice field and viewing films. And finally, the wide receivers needs to help out their quarterback more. The Bears can not afford to have wide receivers line up incorrectly and drop balls with all of the other things going wrong on offense.
The game was overall very hard to watch because of its sloppiness and because it was a very winnable game. The Bears definitely let one get away and will have to work hard all week to come back for a victory next week. So until next time, Bear Down Chicago!

Chicago Bears Daily Blog
As I stumbled around on google searching for a blog to write a link post for, I actually come upon a blog that offers a nice perspective from a fan who has been blogging about the Bears since 2000. In his most recent article Chicago Bears Weekend Six-Pack:12-2, he touches on six relevant issues that I found very interesting and thought I could also give a different perspective to what he says.
1. In his first point, he talks about how he recently received his season ticket holder end of season letter informing him to purchase playoff tickets. After reading that exact sentence, I thought to myself" why would the Bears be sending out a letter informing fans to purchase playoff tickets when there almost no chance the Bears will even host a playoff game." Later on in his first point, he says that he can give his credit card info for the tickets and if they don't host a game, he wont be charged 600 dollars for the tickets. However, he did explain how he would have to pay a $10 "handling fee" to choose the "pay if we play option. When I read this I was astounded! It is highway robbery that the Bears are charging their loyal season ticket holder $10 bucks for basically nothing. If I was this blogger, I would write, email and call the Bears front office about this until I got an answer to why it was happening and refuse to pay this fee. All I have to say is shame on you Chicago Bears.
2. In his second point, he talks about the rumors that the Bears may potentially put a waiver claim in for quarterback Donovan McNabb. I think it would be a very interesting scenario because he would be coming home to play for his hometown team. I am not sure how much McNabb still has in his tank and if he would actually help the Bears win if they were to call on him. I do however know that he would be an upgrade of Josh McCown, simply because he was a starter for the Vikings this year for 9 games. If I do recall, McCown hasn't played a game since 2009 and all reports say he has been extremely rusty in practice this week. If anything, I think it would be a wise move on the Bears part to at least put McNabb through a workout now that he is a free agent and see what he has left
3. In his third topic, he describes that after this weeks game against the Giant's, the Packers basically have no competition left to play and will probably go undefeated. I know the Packer's still play the Bears, and if Jay Cutler was still healthy, I liked the Bears chances of possibly upsetting the Packers. However, Cutler is hurt and I don't think we have seen enough out of Hanie to say he could go into Lambeau Field and beat the Packers. Its a real shame that the defending Super Bowl champions had such a week schedule and I look forward to watching them get tested in the playoffs and possible losing.
4.In his fourth topic, he mentions how Julius Peppers was named the NFC defensive play of the month for November and has basically been playing like man possessed. I could agree anymore with what he claimed and think it is one of the best things that could happen for the Bears right now. Imagine what the defense could do if Peppers keeps playing like this and how it can benefit the others on the defensive line. Peppers is looking to have a quiet 10 sack year and his recent production surge only offers good things for the Bears in the future.
5. His fifth topic talks about the possible promotion of Mike Tice to offensive coordinator if Mike Martz were to leave for the Arizona State coaching job. He offers the idea of possible pursuing someone from Green Bay's coaching to help transform Jay Cutler into a star quarterback like Aaron Rodgers became. Just imagine if that were to happen and the Bears implemented a similar offense as the Packers. I believer they have similar assets at the wide receiver position and have a definite upgrade with Matt Forte. This could be a very interesting scenario and would only mean great things for the Bears and their offense.
6. His last topic talks about the last few times the Bears have played the Chiefs and how they have fared against them. I personally believe the Bears should have an easy time with the Chiefs and it should be a very lopsided game. The Chiefs offense has basically done nothing over the last month and the Bears offense is still doing pretty well considering Jay Cutler is out. Look for a good game out of the Bears and and easy victory.
In finding the Chicago Bears Blog, I have found yet another interesting blog that I will continue to visit and possible try to implement some of the ideas that this blogger has used to run an impressive site for over 10 years. So until next time readers, Bears Down!

Week 13: Midweek Preview
The Bears week 13 match up against the Kansas City Chiefs could end up being a very important game. If the Bears win the game, they pretty much hold their playoff destiny in their hand and would only have to win two out of their remaining four games to make it into the playoffs. If the Bears were to lose this game against the Chiefs, they would have a tough road ahead of them and would have to play great football and win three out of their last four games. However, we are talking about the Kansas City Chiefs here, so I don't believe the Bears will have all that much trouble with them. The Chiefs offense has been anemic this last month or so, having not scored a touchdown in almost a month now. That is good news for the Bears because they should be able to dominate the Chiefs offensively and make this game very easy for the Bears to win. Another thing the Bears will have going for them this week will be having the game at home. Last week, it was obvious that Caleb Hanie was not only nervous in his first NFL start, but may have been flustered by the restless Oakland Raider fans. With the game against the Chiefs at home, Hanie will enjoy a more welcoming atmosphere and will be in an environment he is more comfortable in. I would also expect Hanie to play much better as well. He will not only have had another full week of practice with the first team offense and also probably wont have the same jitters he had last week. It was very encouraging to see him overcome adversity and almost lead the Bears to victory at the end of the Raiders game. I would hope to see offensive coordinator Mike Martz utilize the running game more so Hanie doesn't feel like he has to win the game. Last week the Bears racked up 173 yards on the ground and that was with limited touches to Matt Forte. Imagine what he may have been able to do with 20-30 touches. And speaking of Matt Forte, he needs to regain his focus while on the football field and get back to the way he was playing before this "slump". Recently, he has been trying bounce all of his runs outside for the home run ball and has been very hesitant at the line. If he can get back to just hitting the whole hard, his vision, agility and quickness will provide the big runs on their own. It will also be very interesting to see how Johnny Knox play as he gains another week of repetitions from Hanie. It what little time Hanie has played, it seems like his favorite target has been Knox. Lets see if Knox can build on the huge game he had last week and become more of a fixture in this offense. It will never hurt a quarterback to have that consistent big play reciever to go along with Mr. Reliable, Earl Bennett.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bears shouldn't have too many problems with the Chiefs. They are playing a quarterback in Tyler Palko, who does not seem to have a good grasp of the NFL game and it almost looks as if the game is too fast for him. The Steeler's forced four turnovers out of him last week and the Bears should have a similar fate. Look for defensive end Julius Peppers to continue his dominance as well, as he has racked up four sacks and 10 quarterback pressures in November. If Peppers can continue this tear, it will bode well for the Bears as he will probably draw more double teams and open things up for others such as Henry Melton and Israel Idonije. Another interesting thing to watch is how the Bears respond to being matched punch for punch in the special teams war last week in Oakland. Not many teams will throw out a punter/kicker combo like they were able to which basically shut down Devin Hester. He has been relatively quite these last few games so look for him to come out with a full head of steam. Besides that, I think this should be a fairly easy game for the Bears. I understand the Chiefs have a pretty decent defense, but with the way their offense is playing they wont win may game. I predict the Bears will win handily in a 27-9 game so until next time, Bear Down Chicago.

Changing the Trade Dealine
Recently in the NFL, many team have lost there starting quarterback to injury and have had to scrounge through free agent and older veterans to find a replacement. This very problem has occurred with our beloved Chicago Bears as Jay Cutler was lost for the season when making a touchdown saving tackle against the San Diego Chargers. The Bears were one of the few lucky teams that had a serviceable back in Caleb Hanie, but what about teams like the Kansas City Chiefs or the Houston Texans? A way this flawed system could be fixed by the NFL would be by pushing back the NFL trade deadline. Unlike basketball and baseball, the trade deadline in the NFL is not as active as the others however it is still a nice necessity to have. However, the NFL trade deadline comes far to early in the season for it to even be a factor for teams. By the seventh week of the season, when the current NFL deadline occurs, many teams are still shuffling for position in their division and only a few teams have separated themselves from the back as either front runners or bottom feeders. So with that little of separation occurring by a number of teams in the league, few deal are done at the trade deadline because so many teams are trying jockey for a playoff position and are not ready to sign off on a season. One way I feel the NFL can better itself and help teams like the Texan's, Chiefs and Bears is by extending the trade deadline to later in the season. Imagine what help it would be to a team that is fighting for a playoff birth, such as the Texans, if they were able to make a trade for a quarterback in week 12 lets say, after they have already lost their first and second string quarterbacks. Instead, the current NFL system has teams ruffling through veterans looking for quarterback, that in my opinion have no right being in the league any more. Just recently, the Texan's had to sign Jake Delhomme as their back up quarterback because they had lost start Matt Schuab and backup Matt Leinart to injuries. The Texans are in the middle of a heated playoff run, their first in franchise history and could use a quality NFL worthy quarterback to back up start TJ Yates or possible even start. If the NFL were to move the trade deadline back to week 12, the Texan would have been able to trade for a quarterback such as Kyle Orton, Donavon McNabb, or Matt Flynn. Each of these quarterback would be a more serviceable option then Jake Delhomme and could possibly even help the Texans make it to the playoff like the team dearly needs. I know the NFL is in a constant state of change with trying to protect its players and better the game, so why not try and protect franchises and teams that have late season injuries by moving back the trade deadline. This would not only benefit teams that suffer injuries and need a quick stop gap, but also will benefit the teams that are towards the bottom of each conference. These teams may be able to add valuable draft pick to try and better their team and make the league as a whole more competitive. So NFL, why do you look into moving back the trade deadline? So until next time readers, Bears Down.

The Chicago Perspective
A very important part of blogging in a particular niche is realizing what other material is out there that can help you in many different ways. These other blogs in your niche can provide a different perspective on a similar topic can offer a different median for followers and can offer general help on your blogging topic in general. During my time blogging, I have had many days where I get sidetracked and venture off to look at other blogs to see what others are offering. Some blogs I found offer some great insight into many of the things I have discussed while other steer completely away from what I am trying to communicate. However, time and time again I am drawn to a particular blog not only because the blogger writes quality information on all things Chicago, but also because he offers a very unique perspective on the Chicago Bears. The blog The Chicago Perspective, is written by blogger Joe W, who offers a unique view on all things Chicago. What initially drew me to this blog was his work on the Bears, but I quickly realized he had very good insight on other Chicago teams. One of the biggest things to realize when writing about a Chicago sports teams is that Chicago fans usually support more than one sports team in the city. This is not only because many people who live in and around the beautiful Chicagoland area adore the city, but also because the city has had a strong tradition of winning. Whether it is the Bears winning numerous titles in the early 60's and 70's or the great Bulls teams of the 90's, Chicago has always been blessed with a winning atmosphere. Through this connection, I believe the Chicago Perspective has done something wonderful in attracting more than one Chicago sports fan to his site. I feel as though Windy City Blitz would be able to attract a different audience if we tried something along the same line. That would not only provide current followers with new material to follow but also to attract a new crowd and get them as pumped on the Bears as many are already. Another great thing about the Perspective is the tone that it is written in. When reading the blog, I feel like I am sitting at a sport bar talking anything Chicago with this blogger and nothing could be better. It gives me the feel that I am not just reading the words in front of me and am instead having a deep conversation about the topic. So once again I have to give a shout out to The Chicago Perspective for not only giving some valuable information and knowledge about the Bears, but also spreading the love throughout the sports teams of Chicago. So until next time readers, Bear Down Chicago.
