The fourth preseason game has come and gone, and there were many things that came from the game that was very encouraging. One of the most encouraging things that came from the game was that Caleb Hanie is a serviceable backup for the Bears. Hanie has basically been blasted all preseason for his inconsistent play but he showed some good decision making and skills during the first half. The highlight of the night for him was a beautiful touchdown pass to Johnny Knox through a tight window. I think Hanie silenced some of his critics, Mike Martz, with his play and have reinsured the Bears that he is capable of running the ship if Jay Cutler is to go down. Another area that showed improvement for the Bears was the offensive line. The Bears sent out all starters, minus center Roberto Garza and seemed to play a very good game. They showed the ability to get to the second level on running plays and gave quarterback ample time to throw in the pocket. One of the keys for the Bears success this season rides on whether or not they can protect Jay Cutler in the pocket. Some rookies also did a very good job in this last preseason game, with many probably playing for final roster spots. Dane Sanzenbacker once again looked impressive and showed another aspect of his game with his return ability on special teams. I would be shocked if he didn't make the team and possibly even get some playing time on offense. Defensive ends Mario Addison and Nick Reed both were impressive and made strong pushes for roster spots. Don't be surprised if the Bears keep both players on the roster, with the health of Corey Wootton still uncertain. The game overall was an overall success for the Bears because they did not lose any significant players to injury and they saw some impressive play from some rookies trying to make the team. The first game of the season is only eight days away and expect the buzz around the city to pick up quickly about that. So until next time, Bear Down Chicago.
